Gariottes are a regular feature of the landscape here. They're shelters for shepherds, but this one is unusual. Mostly they're either piles of rocks having collapsed long ago, or they're restored to better than new condition. This one is neither. It's quite damaged but is still recognisable.

Oh dear today's second half of my microtour didn't go to plan. The train I was supposed to be catching into the mountains was cancelled, it was pouring with rain and visibility was minimal. So I improvised a route, but threw in the towel at 2pm when, wet and cold I rode past a station with a train about to depart. No pictures worth posting, so here's a snowy one from yesterday.

For #throwbackthursday here's a shot from my 2009 ride in Kyrgyzstan. Something I always like in ex Soviet countries are the random public monuments you encounter on the road. Sometimes the purpose is obvious, it might be the most extravagant bus stop you've ever seen, a statue or maybe a sign. But sometimes it's completely impenetrable, at least to me, like this huge arch randomly placed on a road in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure it does have some significance really, but to me, a foreign bike tourist rolling through, it was like a mad apparition in the wilderness.

I was just wondering why this field is full of stone towers when the farmer came along and explained. He needed to clear all the stones from the field so he could do tractor type stuff, but decided leaving them in a massive pile like everyone else was just too boring, so he made some sculptures instead. We need more of this sort of thing.

For #throwbackthursday here's a handlebar full of obsolete technology. On the left is one of the first bike GPS units, a Garmin Geko 301 and on the right an ancient Cateye bike computer which unusually for the time, included an altimeter. It was a primitive set up, but it allowed me to navigate the abandoned Soviet era military roads of Tajikistan using digital maps I made myself from satellite images. Here I'm on the 4600m Ak Baital Pass, which was the highest road in the Soviet Union.

Rights of way can be difficult to figure out in France, and this trail is especially ambiguous. I always try to talk to whoever owns the land, but I've never seen a soul in the hamlet just out of shot, but today my luck was in and I met the farmer who was super friendly and explained how it works on his patch. I don't worry too much for myself but I'll be taking customers this way in a couple of weeks so it's good to be sure.
