Now I live in a place where the trails are dry most of the time, I've lost my tolerance for mud. I have some mud tyres but haven't used them once. Now spring is here and it's warming up, the mud has gone and I'm back on the gravel 😎

I'm off on one of my winter micro tours, this time in the Pyrenees. The Col de Soulor is kept open all year and I've never ridden up the east side, so that had to be done. At the top is the junction with the road to the Aubisque via the cirque du litor. It was closed (snow) and is one of my favourites in the Pyrenees so it had to be attempted. It was ok for a couple of km, with just a few easy hike-a-bike sections, but suddenly there was a huge avalanche which had completely blocked the road with worse visible further on. It's not like me to turn back but it seemed like a good plan.

I've often seen pics of these insane bikes being used to pace track riders before motorbikes took over. I've sometimes wondered if any survived, and it turns out this one, made in my home town in around 1900 is very much alive and kicking. It uses very weird chains which I've never seen before which are different to the old inch pitch I just about remember a few old guys riding.

One of the unknowns about my big wilderness ride down the Aveyron gorge was whether I could use a railway bridge to cross the river and link the trails together. It turned out that was no problem, but it also looks like there's a smooth path alongside the track which would bypass most of the difficult sections. I couldn't test it because I didn't have lights with me for the long tunnels, but I'm going to go back soon and try it out.

I was just wondering why this field is full of stone towers when the farmer came along and explained. He needed to clear all the stones from the field so he could do tractor type stuff, but decided leaving them in a massive pile like everyone else was just too boring, so he made some sculptures instead. We need more of this sort of thing.

It's international women's day, so here's a pictur

It's international women's day, so here's a picture of Beryl Burton. I hardly know where to start with her achievements. I reckon that she's the greatest female cyclist ever, but it goes way beyond that. Is she the greatest woman ever in any sport? I think so. She even has a strong case for being the best person, regardless of gender to participate in any sport at all. And she did this at a time when women were even less accepted in cycling than they are now, and when little support was available. Burton was an amateur throughout her long career and worked on a farm. Truly inspirational.
