Normally i ride a fixed wheel on road in winter, but today was a test ride on my tourer after fitting some swanky #veloorange mudguards/fenders and some fat #continetal grand prix 5000 in 32mm flavour. All good apart from a tiny mudguard rattle which was easily fixed. I've wanted to do this for ages, but I had to use up my massive supply of part worn 25s first. As expected the 32s are a much nicer ride.

Rights of way can be difficult to figure out in France, and this trail is especially ambiguous. I always try to talk to whoever owns the land, but I've never seen a soul in the hamlet just out of shot, but today my luck was in and I met the farmer who was super friendly and explained how it works on his patch. I don't worry too much for myself but I'll be taking customers this way in a couple of weeks so it's good to be sure.

It's international women's day, so here's a picture of Beryl Burton. I hardly know where to start with her achievements. I reckon that she's the greatest female cyclist ever, but it goes way beyond that. Is she the greatest woman ever in any sport? I think so. She even has a strong case for being the best person, regardless of gender to participate in any sport at all. And she did this at a time when women were even less accepted in cycling than they are now, and when little support was available. Burton was an amateur throughout her long career and worked on a farm. Truly inspirational.

For #throwbackthursday here's a shot from my 2009 ride in Kyrgyzstan. Something I always like in ex Soviet countries are the random public monuments you encounter on the road. Sometimes the purpose is obvious, it might be the most extravagant bus stop you've ever seen, a statue or maybe a sign. But sometimes it's completely impenetrable, at least to me, like this huge arch randomly placed on a road in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure it does have some significance really, but to me, a foreign bike tourist rolling through, it was like a mad apparition in the wilderness.

One of the unknowns about my big wilderness ride down the Aveyron gorge was whether I could use a railway bridge to cross the river and link the trails together. It turned out that was no problem, but it also looks like there's a smooth path alongside the track which would bypass most of the difficult sections. I couldn't test it because I didn't have lights with me for the long tunnels, but I'm going to go back soon and try it out.

I often ride past these ramshackle wooden barns and sometimes post pictures of them. But I've only just realised that most of them were built as tobacco drying sheds. Tobacco isn't grown here these days so we're just left with a load of weird decaying barns.
