For #throwbackthursday here's a shot I've never posted before of the very weird station at Latour-de-Carol high in the Pyrenees on the French Spanish border. I went there via the highest railway in France to start a mostly off road tour in the Spanish Pyrenees. It's a huge place which was once an important railway junction but now it's like the land that time forgot.

I was just wondering why this field is full of stone towers when the farmer came along and explained. He needed to clear all the stones from the field so he could do tractor type stuff, but decided leaving them in a massive pile like everyone else was just too boring, so he made some sculptures instead. We need more of this sort of thing.

I've often seen pics of these insane bikes being used to pace track riders before motorbikes took over. I've sometimes wondered if any survived, and it turns out this one, made in my home town in around 1900 is very much alive and kicking. It uses very weird chains which I've never seen before which are different to the old inch pitch I just about remember a few old guys riding.

After 2 weeks in the UK with no cycling (and almost no social media either) my legs aren't exactly on fire. First ride out was a bit of a struggle with the gear I usually ride feeling unmanageably big, and the cold damp weather didn't help. But I've been here many times before and so I know that it'll be fine after a couple of rides 💪

Gariottes are a regular feature of the landscape here. They're shelters for shepherds, but this one is unusual. Mostly they're either piles of rocks having collapsed long ago, or they're restored to better than new condition. This one is neither. It's quite damaged but is still recognisable.

One of the unknowns about my big wilderness ride down the Aveyron gorge was whether I could use a railway bridge to cross the river and link the trails together. It turned out that was no problem, but it also looks like there's a smooth path alongside the track which would bypass most of the difficult sections. I couldn't test it because I didn't have lights with me for the long tunnels, but I'm going to go back soon and try it out.
