Winter has returned with a vengeance. Suddenly it's weirdly cold, windy and wet, so out came the winter bike again. I don't think I've ever ridden my fixed in Najac because of all the hills, but to my surprise it was OK.

It's international women's day, so here's a picture of Beryl Burton. I hardly know where to start with her achievements. I reckon that she's the greatest female cyclist ever, but it goes way beyond that. Is she the greatest woman ever in any sport? I think so. She even has a strong case for being the best person, regardless of gender to participate in any sport at all. And she did this at a time when women were even less accepted in cycling than they are now, and when little support was available. Burton was an amateur throughout her long career and worked on a farm. Truly inspirational.

These processionary caterpillars are an amazing sight, moving in a long line across this gravel track. They are very poisonous though, touch them and you'll know about it - dogs have been known to die after trying to eat them.

Rights of way can be difficult to figure out in France, and this trail is especially ambiguous. I always try to talk to whoever owns the land, but I've never seen a soul in the hamlet just out of shot, but today my luck was in and I met the farmer who was super friendly and explained how it works on his patch. I don't worry too much for myself but I'll be taking customers this way in a couple of weeks so it's good to be sure.

I've often seen pics of these insane bikes being used to pace track riders before motorbikes took over. I've sometimes wondered if any survived, and it turns out this one, made in my home town in around 1900 is very much alive and kicking. It uses very weird chains which I've never seen before which are different to the old inch pitch I just about remember a few old guys riding.

I often ride past these ramshackle wooden barns and sometimes post pictures of them. But I've only just realised that most of them were built as tobacco drying sheds. Tobacco isn't grown here these days so we're just left with a load of weird decaying barns.

I managed a cheeky tour in the Spanish Pyrenees in December. This was taken at 2000m at around -10c at a guess, but with bone dry roads and lots of layering it was doable. I had to cut the tour short on the 3rd day because of deep snow, but to have ridden there at all in December was a win.
